What Does RYA Day Skipper Qualify You For?

Completing the RYA Day Skipper theory and practical courses prepares you to skipper a small yacht or motorboat during daylight hours in familiar waters with a good level of confidence and safety awareness, keeping your crew and yacht safe whilst at sea.

It is not a legal requirement for UK based leisure skippers on privately operated UK flagged vessels to have any qualifications, but it severely limits where you can sail and your insurance options.

Without an RYA Day Skipper certificate and/or an accompanying ICC (International Certificate of Competence), it is also unlikely that you will be able to charter a yacht in Europe or the UK.

When Commercially Endorsed, the Day Skipper practical certificate also qualifies you to operate "paid for" activities in a limited area. You can work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, operating in category 5 and 6 waters — that is up to 20 miles from a nominated departure point in fine weather and daylight.

How to Get Your RYA Day Skipper Qualification

Achieving your Day Skipper certification follows a clear pathway.

1. Complete Day Skipper Theory

Start with the shore-based theory course, which covers navigation, meteorology, safety, and seamanship. This can be completed through classroom learning or online study, typically taking around 40 hours. Online courses offer the flexibility to study at your own pace whilst receiving support from RYA Yachtmaster™ Instructors.

2. Build Practical Experience

Before taking the Day Skipper practical course, you should have basic sailing experience — typically 5 days and 100 miles at sea, including 4 hours of night sailing. This experience can be gained through sailing with friends, joining a yacht club, or taking an RYA Competent Crew course.

3. Day Skipper Practical Course

Complete a 5-day practical course at any RYA recognised training centre. During this hands-on training, you'll put your theory knowledge into practice under the guidance of an experienced RYA instructor.

4. Receive Your Certification

Upon successful completion, you'll receive your RYA Day Skipper certificate, recognised worldwide for chartering and insurance purposes.

What Will You Learn on the Day Skipper Course?

The RYA Day Skipper courses cover both shore-based and practical training, equipping you to:

  • Plan and conduct short passages by day in coastal waters.
  • Handle a yacht or motorboat under power and sail in moderate conditions.
  • Anchor, moor, and use berths safely, including inside marinas, alongside quays and buoys.
  • Navigate using electronic devices (GNSS), charts, compass, and basic pilotage, and apply the collision regulations (IRPCS).
  • Manage emergencies, including man-overboard situations and basic engine or rigging problems.
  • Understand weather forecast sources, tidal height predictions and their basic interpretation for safe inshore navigation.

To begin your Day Skipper journey, most sailors start with the RYA Day Skipper Theory course, which can be completed online at your own pace before undertaking the practical training.

What Can You Do After Successfully Completing the Training?

After completing the course, you will have learnt to:

  • Act as the skipper of a yacht or motorboat during daytime in familiar, sheltered coastal or inland waters.
  • Plan and execute short cruises with crew members, ensuring safety and adherence to legal rules.
  • Have a basic competence in navigation and seamanship, sufficient for further progression to coastal or offshore sailing courses.
  • Charter yachts worldwide — most charter companies in the Mediterranean and beyond require Day Skipper as a minimum qualification. You'll be able to charter yachts typically ranging from 30–45 feet in familiar coastal waters.
  • Apply for an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) — with your Day Skipper practical certificate, you can apply for an ICC, which is required for chartering in many European countries and recognised internationally.
  • Consider Commercial Endorsement and operate a small commercial boat in local waters. When commercially endorsed, you can work on vessels up to 24 metres offering skippered charters, sailing experiences, or water taxi services.

It is important to note that the Day Skipper does not prepare you for night sailing or offshore passages.

What Next After Day Skipper?

After Day Skipper, many sailors continue to:

  • Build more confidence through practical experience in diverse conditions, either chartering yachts or taking the plunge into ownership.
  • Take Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster™ theory courses to expand your navigation skills and plan for longer passages. The RYA Yachtmaster™ Theory course covers advanced coastal and offshore navigation, preparing you for extended cruising and offshore passages.
  • Train for RYA Coastal Skipper or more advanced RYA certificates of competence including Yachtmaster™, which are required to skipper larger yachts commercially or for longer passages.

Many sailors also add the RYA VHF/SRC Marine Radio qualification, which is essential for coastal cruising and required for commercial endorsement.

Completion of the RYA Day Skipper course ensures that you have the knowledge, skills, and understanding of the legal responsibilities for safe daytime local coastal and inshore cruising with a small crew in UK and familiar European waters.
