The RYA Day Skipper Theory course is a 40-hour comprehensive introductory cruising course by Sailing Course Online. The RYA Day Skipper is designed for inexperienced skippers. It equips participants with the necessary knowledge for safe navigation, offering online modules with interactive tests at the end of each section. Immediate access to full answers and the option to revisit any part of the module ensure confidence before moving on. The course culminates in a remote exam, where answers are submitted online and promptly assessed by an RYA qualified instructor, typically within one to two working days. Successful completion prepares students for the RYA Day Skipper practical course.

General Assessment Paper assesses candidates on their theoretical knowledge and understanding of key topics related to sailing and navigation. The assessment may include questions on navigation, meteorology, collision regulations, safety procedures, and other essential aspects of sailing.
Chartwork Assessment Paper evaluates a candidate's proficiency in practical navigation skills and the ability to apply chartwork techniques. This may cover topics such as Plotting Courses, Position Fixing, Tidal Calculations and Pilotage and Passage Planning.
All exams are undertaken remotely are closed booked. You will need to refer to your RYA Almanac and Charts 3 & 4. Once started, exams are timed by the system and must be completed. Individual exams do not need to be completed on the same day.
